@MaverickJack66 lol, interesting take on it. I don’t think so though. Isn’t it more about him wanting to get with his mate’s sister, in part, because she looks like his friend

Great band – but Jarvis, what a misogynist – you don’t want to be female in a Pulp song!

@Danazawa the song’s about adolescent male confusion – in fact most of Jarvis’s songs relating to the subject are bitingly self-critical about youthful male desires. Wouldn’t call him a mysoginist, he’s just writing about a little-tapped subject.

this is my favourite pulp song but i’ve always had trouble understanding it
Is the chorus written as jarvis talking to this girl, or the boy, ‘david’ talking to the girl’s sister
Also, is the second verse about jarvis trying to ‘get it on’ with the girl after seeing what her sister does?

gisforgillett: my understanding is that he is copying David and the girl’s sister and repeating either what David said or what the sister wanted to hear, hoping this would impress the girl as it worked for David. I think the “wardrobe” is a euphemism, with different meanings in each verse.

Does anyone else’s heart break a little when they listen to this? I mean it’s such a bright happy melody, but the story’s so sad…
